Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced $6.3 million in grants to 27 veteran service organizations in Southeast Texas, the Texas Veterans Commission said.
The Funds for Veterans' Assistance grants will provide services to an estimated 4,800 local veterans. The grants support emergency financial assistance, clinical counseling, non-clinical mental health services, housing, legal services, meals, and homeless veteran support.
The largest grants include $400,000 to Lone Star Legal Aid for pro bono legal services, $350,000 each to Easter Seals of Greater Houston and Houston Habitat for Humanity, and $300,000 each to PTSD Foundation of America for clinical counseling and Rebuilding Together Houston for housing.
"Your organizations are recognized for making a difference in the lives of those who served," said Chip Osborne, director of veteran services for the Texas Veterans Commission and an Army veteran.
The grants are part of the Texas Veterans Commission's Grants Across Texas Tour. In May, the commission approved 190 grants totaling $40.8 million statewide, anticipated to serve more than 125,600 veterans, dependents, and surviving spouses. Since 2009, more than $400 million has been awarded through approximately 1,790 such grants.
