Six post offices in North Carolina have been suspended for nearly two years pending repairs, leasing decisions or operational determinations, according to an audit by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General.
The post offices were among 240 facilities in the North Carolina District affected by Hurricanes Helene and Milton in fall 2024. The Postal Service temporarily closed the offices and moved services elsewhere.
Extensive damage to buildings or communities has delayed decisions to reopen, permanently close or relocate the suspended offices, the audit said. The Inspector General found that the Postal Service has opportunities to strengthen its lease payment process to reduce unnecessary payments on the properties. The audit identified potential recovery of almost $43,000 in lease payments.
