California Department of Fish and Wildlife published guidance for developers, staff and others on avoiding or minimizing harm to four bumble bee species now protected under the California Endangered Species Act.
The species are Crotch's Bumble Bee, Franklin's Bumble Bee, Western Bumble Bee and Suckley's Cuckoo Bumble Bee. They became the first insects to qualify as CESA candidates in September 2022 and are protected by the same take prohibitions given to species listed as endangered or threatened under CESA.
The guidance document covers life history, seasonal ecology and conservation measures specific to each species. It is intended as a science-based resource that may be updated as information evolves or species status changes.
The document is non-regulatory and does not establish mandatory requirements or replace applicable laws and regulations. Project proponents who believe their work may harm the species can contact their nearest CDFW regional office to discuss options for compliance.
