Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales announced that the office has been named a 2026 AI 50 Award winner by the Center for Public Sector AI on August 25. The recognition identifies the office as one of the nation's leading public-sector organizations in responsible and effective artificial intelligence use.
The office was recognized for its enterprise-wide AI strategy that is improving services across divisions including Business Services, Securities and Auto Dealer Services. Current applications include AI-powered constituent assistance, licensing and workflow modernization, education, and preservation of Indiana's historical records.
One flagship initiative is Captain Record, which uses generative AI to make more than 20 million historical Indiana records searchable in minutes. The office has also launched bilingual AI virtual agents assisting Hoosiers and businesses with state services and an AI-powered education system serving more than 50,000 Indiana notaries.
"This national recognition reflects our commitment to making the services of the Indiana Secretary of State's Office more welcoming, responsive, innovative, and efficient for the people we serve," Morales said. "Technology is valuable when it helps government serve Hoosiers better, protects taxpayer resources and strengthens public trust."
