Pittsburgh Water and the City of Pittsburgh broke ground on the Stewart Avenue Stormwater Improvement Project, a $6.8 million infrastructure project designed to address flooding concerns in the Carrick and Overbrook neighborhoods.
The project will install a new storm sewer system on Stewart Avenue, along with new catch basins and manholes to capture stormwater runoff that currently flows across streets and toward homes. Roadway improvements, including new curbs and pavement, will also be made to Stewart Avenue and surrounding streets.
A new green infrastructure facility near Stewart Avenue and Horning Street will capture and temporarily hold stormwater before slowly releasing it into the stormwater system, reducing peak flows during heavy rainfall and decreasing pressure on Saw Mill Run.
Construction will take place along Stewart Avenue from Saw Mill Run Boulevard to Parkdale Street, as well as portions of Parkdale Street, Esther Street, Horning Street and Carol Circle. Work is expected to continue through September 2027. Pittsburgh Water will fund the storm sewer and green infrastructure improvements, while the City will fund roadway improvements.
