The Internal Revenue Service will shut down its FIRE (Filing Information Returns Electronically) system after a November maintenance window and require all electronic filers to use IRIS (Information Returns Internet System) for 2026 tax year returns, the agency said.
IRIS, which launched in 2023, offers a modernized filing process through two channels. The IRIS Taxpayer Portal is a free, web-based system that allows filers to submit up to 100 returns at a time using manual entry or CSV file uploads. The IRIS Application to Application system accommodates larger-volume filers using third-party or custom software.
Filers preparing for the transition should apply for Transmitter Control Codes through IRIS and review guidance on IRS.gov. The IRS will provide updates through IRIS QuickAlerts, monthly Working Group meetings held on the second Wednesday of each month, and its website.
