The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has confirmed 17 cases of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) and salmonella linked to alfalfa sprouts from Everything Sprouts sold under the Calco and Everything Sprouts brand names. One person has been hospitalized.
The Wisconsin cases are part of a multistate outbreak. Minnesota has identified 23 cases linked to the same outbreak, and illnesses have been identified in other states as well. The sprouts were distributed to restaurants and grocery stores.
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services is advising residents to check their homes for alfalfa sprouts from Everything Sprouts and Calco, throw them away, and not eat them. Anyone who has consumed these sprouts should monitor for symptoms of salmonella and STEC infection and contact a health care provider if symptoms become severe.
The agency is working with Minnesota health officials, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and other states to investigate the outbreak.
