Santa Fe's city and county officials said they stand with all residents following federal immigration enforcement activity in their community.
Santa Fe Police did not participate in the federal immigration enforcement operations, and the city is pursuing legislation to prohibit federal authorities from staging or conducting enforcement operations on city property. Under city policy and Resolution 1999-6, municipal resources are not used to identify or apprehend noncitizen residents solely based on immigration status unless legally required.
Santa Fe County has established similar protections. Under County Resolution No. 2025-015, the Adult Detention Facility does not honor ICE administrative warrants or house immigrants for civil immigration violations, and the Sheriff's Office does not participate in ICE's 287(g) program or enforce federal immigration law.
The city and county are pursuing a "Safe Spaces" initiative at municipal facilities including libraries, community centers, housing, and community services locations, with bilingual signage explaining residents' rights.
"When people become afraid to call police, seek health care, find housing, or ask government for help, our entire community becomes less safe. Community trust is public safety. Dignity is public safety. Protecting civil liberties is public safety," said Santa Fe County Commissioner Lisa Cacari Stone.
