Sunnyvale has launched Beam, an all-electric, shared-ride service offering on-demand trips throughout the city, according to the city. The service began operating on Aug. 18.
The service is available anywhere in Sunnyvale plus at Homestead High School and Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center. Riders can book a trip through the Sunnyvale Beam app or by calling 408-547-9943.
Beam charges $3.50 per ride, with reduced fares of $1.75 for seniors ages 65 and older, people with disabilities, low-income riders, and youth ages 13–18. Additional passengers cost $1 each. The service is offering three free rides to new users.
Operating hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., and weekends, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. On holidays including New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Via operates the service under a contract with the city. The service is funded in part by California's Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program and supports the city's goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by using an all-electric fleet.
