Governor Greg Abbott requested today that Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts Don Huffines audit local school districts to ensure taxpayer money reaches students and classrooms. The examination will focus on up to four independent school districts of varying size and geographic location. The state oversees $104.9 billion in annual K-12 education spending.
Abbott said he wants to ensure education dollars reach "students, classrooms, and teachers, rather than central-office growth, administrative bloat, consultants, and the web of noninstructional bureaucracy." He said Texas expects education funds to be "spent in compliance with the law."
The comptroller has been asked to complete the review by December 31, 2026. Abbott indicated the findings will inform whether additional reforms should be considered by the state legislature when it convenes next year.
