The U.S. Department of Homeland Security terminated Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Ethiopia effective Aug. 18, 2026, after determining that country conditions no longer warranted the designation.
According to the department, the decision was made after former Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem reviewed country conditions and consulted with appropriate U.S. government agencies. A Federal Register notice published in December 2025 established the termination, and a June 2026 Supreme Court decision in Mullin v. Doe upheld the government's authority to end TPS designations.
The termination invalidates employment authorization documents (EADs) with category A12 or C19 that were issued to TPS Ethiopia beneficiaries. Employers must reverify affected employees and cannot continue employing a person who does not provide proof of current employment authorization.
