San Mateo County received the inaugural Government Partner Volunteer of the Year Award from Special Olympics Northern California, recognizing the county's efforts to expand opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The honor was presented during the 2026 Special Olympics Northern California Summer Games, held at Santa Clara University. The Games brought together more than 1,000 athletes, coaches and volunteers for three days of competition that included track and field, tennis, swimming and other sports, along with health screenings and community activities.
In November 2024, the County Board of Supervisors approved $750,000 in Measure K funding over three years to support Special Olympics Northern California. The funding supports outreach to schools and recreation programs, recruitment of volunteer coaches and athletes, and transportation for participants who might otherwise be unable to attend competitions and events.
Supervisor Lisa Gauthier and County Executive Mike Callagy accepted the award on the county's behalf during the Games.
