Foreign investors bought $172.7 billion in U.S. securities in June

Treasury data show net capital inflows across securities, Treasury bills, and banking relationships.

Foreign residents increased their holdings of long-term U.S. securities in June, with net purchases of $207.1 billion, according to Treasury Department data. Net purchases by private foreign investors were $169.8 billion, while net purchases by foreign official institutions were $37.3 billion.

The sum total of all net foreign acquisitions of long-term securities, short-term U.S. securities, and banking flows was a net inflow of $133.5 billion in June. Of this, net foreign private inflows were $85.0 billion, and net foreign official inflows were $48.4 billion.

After adjustments including estimated foreign portfolio acquisitions through stock swaps, overall net foreign purchases of long-term securities were $172.7 billion in June.

Foreign residents decreased their holdings of U.S. Treasury bills by $29.0 billion. Foreign resident holdings of all dollar-denominated short-term U.S. securities and other custody liabilities decreased by $4.9 billion. Banks' own net dollar-denominated liabilities to foreign residents decreased by $34.4 billion.

U.S. residents increased their holdings of long-term foreign securities, with net purchases of $34.4 billion.
