Texas is distributing more than $2 million in grants to nine higher education institutions to expand free, openly licensed textbooks and course materials for students in nursing and workforce training programs.
The grants are awarded through the Open Educational Resource Grant Program, which helps institutions create and adopt openly licensed textbooks accessible through the OERTX digital library.
Governor Greg Abbott said the funding will make education more affordable. "These grants will expand access to free learning materials to make education more affordable for Texans," he said.
Since the program was established in 2018, it has assisted more than 33,000 Texas students and saved an estimated $3.5 million in textbook costs, according to Texas Higher Education Commissioner Wynn Rosser.
