The California Gig Workers Union has reached the support threshold needed to represent rideshare drivers across the state, becoming the world's largest union of gig drivers. The California Public Employment Relations Board (PERB), the state agency overseeing gig workers, verified the milestone.
The union can be formally certified as the collective bargaining representative for Lyft and Uber drivers after a 30-day waiting period. The development follows AB 1340, signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom last year, which gave rideshare drivers legal protections to unionize and collectively bargain over wages, benefits, and working conditions.
"Today is a new day for rideshare drivers who have spent a decade fighting for a stronger voice on the job," Newsom said in a statement.
